Actually Kona when I was a kid they were. 5 gallon plastic cans cut to different depths for different sounds...and I used the metal lids for cymbals. my parents got tired of the plastic can noise and finally bought me a real drum set.

Here's a picture of my band about 2-3 yrs ago....
