Engine placement? V-drive

I'm curious about engine placement. I have heard people ask about correct engine placement on flat bottoms and got to thinking. The motor in my boat is sitting back quite far when compared to other v-drives , would I bennefit from a speed
standpoint if I moved it up and how far would I move it? Is there any way to help decide this or is it a trial and error type deal? Any stead fast starting points? TIA

JJ is the person to talk to about that kind of stuff , he is the local expert on v-drive setup . From a speed stand point there are advantages to moving the motor forward , but you lose the back seat in most cases . My 66 Stevens had the motor set forward almost a foot more than my 64 Stevens does . But the 64 is a better family boat , and has a back seat . There are alot of guys that hang out over on performance boats forums that might be able to tell you where the sweet spot is for your setup as well .

Where is JJ ? I can't get him on the phone. I don't have a family and I don't have a back seat either. The one bucket that was in the back was just sitting there and not bolted dow. I took it out. Maybe JJ will see this and chime in??
PS: The guys on PB do have knoledge but tyring to get a straight answer I just gave up. :smile14:

Yep .. JJ was down at the River with us in his Baron Sprint , You should be able to reach him

You need to get some numbers on this boat before you start moving stuff around . It might be fine just like it is . I would run it for a while and see how it takes a set and how it runs out the back door before I would touch the placement of anything .

It might not have the power to hold the nose up if you move the engine forward , and then it will bounce up and down  on you and you will have to put some Cavitation Plate in it  to keep it from doing this . ..

Get that prop back on it or another one and go for it .
