Well my motor threw a rod on sat.
I am going to pick up a new motor tomorrow that is a fresh build still on engine stand.
What do i need to do to break in the new motor?
Can i do it on the water hose at my shop, or do i need to have the pump loaded up in the water.
Anybody have a procedure on the do and donts of new boat motor break-in

I'm sure it has a flat tappet, so it need to bust off immediately, and have a zinc oil additive added to the oil. Motor needs to see varied rpm above 2500 for at least 10 minutes. Install the motor w/o the driveline to save the pump. pull motor, re-install driveline, go to lake. make damn sure you bought a marine-clearanced engine, or you'll be doing it again. (that's the short version, call if you need help. 361-550-9667 after 6pm)

that was a good question jc! i was just lookin into what duane was talkin about on marine-clearance! this is what i found! Marine Applications generally require an extra .001"-.003" clearance because of the possible combination of high load operation and cold water to the block. A cold block with hot pistons is what dictates the need for extra marine clearance

Makes sense. All my motors have been regular clearance. Maybe I'll extra clearance my next one. I try to have the engine run at around 160-180 degrees.

It's been said over and over to take everything with a grain salt. But we are luck enough to have some gurues that share their knowledge. And then we have most that like to share their ideas in times of insanity or under the influence of whatever.  :smile30:

This is the first I've ever heard of such, is this something recommended for V-Drives as well?  I know my engine wasn't built that way.

I guess it makes sense... pistons get real hot do to extended high rpms and expand, but the block doesnt cause it has cold lake water running through it at all times... i guess we will just need to find a hot tub to run our "non marine clearanced motors" in from now on...

I like mine to run around 190 or so at idle. If they get up to 200-210 I'll adjust the ball valve and let a little more water in. Once you get going the water temp will drop and you don't want it running too cold on a engine that doesn't have the clearances it needs. I like the engine to get hot enough to burn off any moisture/condensation that has built up.
