Trim?

I'm building a new engine cover for the Hawaiian. I want to carpet the base, and paint the top or lid if you will. What I need to find is a trim or u shaped rubber molding to cap the carpeted base. I also want to use it to cap the bottom of my dash, to clean up the appearance. It needs to be apprx. 1/2 thick. I have found some rubber u channel but was wondering if there was anything out there that would look better? think.gif This is my first boat resto so some of the products I'm not familiar with.

I'm not sure what your engine cover looks like now, to understand about a base & a lid... Got a pic of it or something similar.

Greaser had gotten some trim to do the underside of the his dash awhile back, it wasn't rubber though, it was aluminum I believe. Almost sounds like your describing weatherstripping. I've seen it in JC Whitney catalogs back in the day, in all sorts of shapes & configurations. Probably only get it in black though.

Kind of like this! Top opens up. I need to terminate the carpet into something, plus cover the 1/2 ply that it is made of where the top meets the bottom.

K, I got ya... Why not just bring the carpet up & over the top of the base? Whatever exposed wood down into the bilge is left showing could be painted the same color as the carpet or just black, so it kind of "disappears"...

The lid is not going to be upholstered?

Fiberglass and Gel it it inside and out that way you wont have to do again a few yrs down the road and the inside of the hatch can be cleaned and wiped down from oil/ belt dust and or any other engine goo

I'm thinking the carpet won't look good making that tite bend over the top. I'll try it and see. Plus it mite wear there and look like crap after awhile. Again I don't know but I will look into that.

Patch I went to a local boat dealer (Sport Marine) he had a book with every kind of trim you could ever imagine.  Go to a place like that I am sure they have the same book.

I will do the top and possibly inside the base that way. I really want to carpet it to match the seat bases.

Thats what I did with my seat bases & it came out pretty good, not sure how stiff your carpet is though, that would definitely make a difference in how smooth it comes out. Carpet on my seat bases is pretty thin, so it laid down well. It wearing there may be a possibility, again, thickness or style of carpet would play a part in that. I say that cuz the carpet I used for my bunks, doesn't look much different now than it did 5 years ago when I put it on. And its had the weight of the boat squirming around on it, lol...

I'm not sure about the wood. I do have a friend that re-finished my teak strips on my swim deck , he is good with that wood stuff.  think.gif

You might look at like a J-Mold from a mirrow and glass store , you can get them in difference finishes , brass, silver , chrome .. Also they make a J-Mold trim to cap off sheetrock  that might work for you .
I not sure the thickness of the plywood that you have , so you may have to shop around to find something that will work for the plywood thickness ..

they make all kinds of aluminum u-shape  channel for stuff that should work to cap off the plywood . .

Thanks for the links! I did a test with the carpet, and it will fold over just fine. So all I need is something for under the dash. That u or j molding is probably my best bet. clap.gif
