Memorial weekend at Lake Travis

Hi All,

We thought we’d give y’all more info about V-Drive Bob’s 26th Annual Memorial Weekend Camping  at Pace Bend Park http://www.co.travis.tx.us/tnr/parks/pace_bend.asp.  (OK, it wasn’t always called that, and it may never have been called exactly that until just this very moment!)

The Beginning:
26 years ago, Bobby and some friends had been talking about camping and he and Chad packed a cooler of food and drinks and headed out to Johnson’s Cove in the Camaro.  He admits it has gotten a bit more organized and planned in the last quarter century!

About Johnson’s Cove:
Johnson’s Cove is a Primitive Camping area.  There are quite a few sites with freestanding BBQ’s and most have a picnic table.  Some tables are wood and others are concrete, so bring padding for you rears or more comfy chairs.  There is a LOT of sand and dirt.  Bring a broom for your tent.  This ain’t the soft somewhat clean grassy campground we see at Coletto Creek.  The bathrooms are basically a Hole in the ground with a couple seats each for men and women.  Bring a roll or two of your preferred tissue as what they have (if they don’t run out) ain’t worth $#!T.   There are no showers.  You take your soap and shampoo down to the lake to get the sweat and dirt off.  There is no electricity nearby and no running water at the campsite.  You can bring containers down the road a ways to fill up for washing dishes or your feet before you climb in your tent.

Other things to be aware of:
Lake Travis is patrolled by 5 law enforcement agencies.  Install your mufflers or baffles.  They aren’t known for giving warnings about anything including what they deem “noise”, and it would really suck to get a ticket for being too loud!   Also, make sure you have all the required safety equipment with you.

You can Google the address
2011 Pace Bend Rd N
Spicewood, TX 78669
for directions to get there.

Any questions?

Let's all take the time to drop a line or call.
This is the latest entry into the Journal: Written by Bob's wife Sam:
We have been struggling with a very difficult decision, how much do we tell the kids?  They knew "Daddy" was sick, they knew he had cancer, and they knew it was bad.  Of course, Casey understands more than Carson and we felt it best to be honest with her, she is old enough to understand.  We have Not told Carson what I am about to post and are waiting for input from a counselor that worked with the kids when my mom was sick last year.  Bobby is now classified as terminal, he came home on Hospice.  He told me to just say it.  Most people have figured it out by now, but there it is.  We are still praying and will continue!  His liver will not tolerate the chemotherapy, that is why it started failing in the hospital.  Because of his liver condition both radiation and chemotherapy are not an option.  The night they put him in ICU they did another CT scan and found a brand new mass that had grown while having back to back chemo's and daily radiation for two weeks.  This is a very agressive cancer and the doctor's have nothing left to fight it with.  They have not given us a time limit, although they do not feel like it will be a very long time with an agressive cancer like this.  On the other hand, since he has gotten off of the radiation and chemo and they did the abdominal taps with the help of medication all of the fluid is gone.  He has now been weaned off of the diuretics and his liver seems to be much better.  He mostly has good days, mostly pain free but does nap a lot.  Thank goodness he doesn't have a lot of pain.

Visiting has been opened up now that the Flu scare seems to be gone.  Although, we ask if you have any respitory issues, even a small cough, that you wait until you are better.  We still ask that you call first.

Bobby would like to make one more "Memorial Day Camping Trip."  We have been fortunate enough to receive a camper rental so he can make thisl  SO, We Would Like to Extend an invatation to all to make it out to the campsite @ Johnson Cove, Pace Been Park.  We will be leaving early on the 20th and returning on the 26th of May.  We hope to see you there!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Well, here's the skinny.
Went out Thursday to take my Mom's boyfriend out on Sweet-v and check out the lake.  Ouch!  I didn't think the lake was THAT low!  One of the two boat ramps was open.  Lots of rocks on the banks, so launching will be a little tricky, but not impossible.
We'll be there Wednesday afternoon.

The address for any of y'all that need to google or mapquest it for directions is
2011 Pace Bend Rd N Spicewood, TX 78669

Attached are a few picts I took Thursday out there.

The the lake looks like a water way and no way to beach or anchor with the big boats blasting
by,  Camp's are I would say at least a few 100 feet away.
