ON THE ROAD AGAIN

:smile17: Well here I am again in beautiful Van Horn Texas at the plush Red Roof Inn. I will be in Blythe Ca. for the Memorial Day weekend.

The trip from College Station to here was smooth. There is a lot less traffic this time. Even Fredericksburg was fairly quiet. Once I got on I10 it was just me and the semis. Very few cars or trucks. Even less semis than usual.

One nice thing I noticed was the sides of the roads were noticeably cleaner. Not so much tire debris from the semis.

I will be out here for 5 weekends. The virus has altered some of our plans. I'll explain more later.

That's cool Jeff, glad your plans didn't get too jacked up with all this virus stuff. And yeah, for awhile there was way less traffic on the roads around here, it's starting to come back though. That will be one thing I miss about all that nonsense, empty roads lol

Have fun and be safe!

You gonna hook up with the RDP folks on this? https://www.riverdavesplace.com/forums/threads/we-have-to-beat-florida-get-your-shit-together.217708/

* oops, re-read your post, guess not.  :cheesy:

The first is my garden in C.S. The others are just random shots. Not much traffic.

Made it to Blythe. There is a new 202 bypass around the south and west of Phoenix. No more going thru town on I10. That saves 20 minutes at least for the trip to Blythe. Unpack, load fridge, eat lunch with a few beers. Nap time ahead.

Been on the lower river two days now. The lower river (below I10) is less busy than the upper river (above I10). The weather has been perfect. Mid to low 90's and cool in the morning and evening. Water is 75 degrees. I took a few pics Sunday and will post them later.

We are going up river today because most people are heading home today so there will be way less boat traffic. M

First pic is Parker, my first mate/wingman and my granddaughter and here friend Maggie. Parker is Matt's 13 year old son. He helps me launch, retrieve and clean the boat at the end of the day.

The other two are just random shots of the day on the water.

:smile26: And now for the rest of the story. Saturday all went well with the three boats, Rob's, Matt's and mine.

Sunday was a little different. We all launched at The Cove together. I launched first and went out of the cove into the main river to wait for the other two. I wasn't paying much attention and Parker said his dad had already gone by headed South. We waited a little longer for Rob and decided to head South to catch up with Matt. After going 11 miles we still didn't see Matt so I decided to stop at a small sand bar and wait for Rob.

Half and hour goes buy and still no Rob. Parker still insists his dad went ahead of us. I get a text that all of them are at a sandbar about 2 miles up river from us. Seems Matt didn't go buy us as Parker said. We go up river to the group and hang out the rest of the day there at the sandbar. Rob said his motor flooded and it took a long time to get it started.

We leave the sandbar and go upriver to Goose Flats to see who is there. It's a neat little back bay place that can hold 30 to 40 boats, just off the main river. We hang out there for a while and I see Rob has his motor cover up. The motor is making a ticking noise but running OK. It's about 5 PM so we decide to head back to the Cove and put them on the trailer. Rob leaves first, Matt second and I was talking to some guys about the Baja so I was a few minutes behind.

I get out into the main river and Rob has the engine hatch up again. Says it made a loud bang and he shut it off. So there we are 5 miles, down river, from the launch ramp. Guess who gets to tow him back 5 miles up river against the current which is running fast today. Probably 4 to 5 mph. To be brief I ended up towing him on plane. His is a 21' Carrea bowrider, no light weight. We are doing 23 mph and my engine is turning 4500 rpm and you can hear the strain on the motor. No problem, oil pressure is 50 and water temp is 142 all the way back.

Soooo, long story short he destroyed a push rod top. The little ball was pushed down about 1" and all that metal is in the motor somewhere.
Monday. No problem. Rob and Steph ride the jet ski up river to Jungle Beach sandbar. Kenda and Maggie want to ride the jet ski. That's when we find out the key that's supposed to be hooked to the vest is GONE!!!!!

Soooo, when it's time to head back, down river this time, I tow Rob on the jet ski at about 30 mph back to the Cove. A lot less strain on the Baja motor this time.

I had never towed anyone on plane before in 37 years. Now 2 times in 2 days. And the same guy!!!!

I'm back in Phoenix. Left the boat at the Cove, be back there next weekend.

Pretty crazy the things that can happen. I've towed on plane before... twice actually. Once was Stuart in his Sanger at Altair when he ran out of gas and the other time was my brother's boat when ignition  crapped out. Got pics of both occasions somewhere... :smile16: Funny thing was when I towed my brother's boat, they rode with us. We passed some folks on the way to the ramp, I know they had to be confused when they saw that ol tri-hull keeping pace with us with no one behind the wheel, lol!  crazy.gif :smile28:

I never even thought about towing on plane till Rob mentioned it. It gave me new faith in my motor. Towing his Carrera was a strain on that little 496 for sure.

Yep, why waste time if ya don't have to haha. jump.gif

Weight would definitely be a factor. Stuart was by himself and it was just Carole and I in my boat, no extra gear in either boat. Popped him up on plane rather easy.  Tim still had his jet boat back then, he ran out of gas that day on his way back to the ramp and I pulled him as well. By then, both of our boats were loaded with extra people, coolers, etc. and I couldn't get him on plane at all. I did fog them out pretty bad with header steam while I tried though, lol :smile14: :smile16:

I went to the gym for the first time in about 3 months. In the bible I think there is a passage that starts In the beginning there was nothing.... I now know what that means. Boy this is going to be a long road back.

Damage to Rob's motor. He's ordering a new long block. Compression  test showed a bent valve.

We did have a good day on the water though. I had to tow Rob's jet ski in again. Only 500 yards or so.
