Concreted Block Question

OK :
I have a Merlin 2 Block that is concreted up to the bottom of the water pump holes . My question is: Beside the oil running hotter than a normal water jacketed block , what other concern are there to run a block that has been filled . I have a tube type oil cooler that I can add to the boat also .. But I do not believe the oil temp caused the problem below . Is there a concern about heat spot in the block from the concrete ?

I lost number 5 bearing at Plowman and it took out number 6 rod also , plus took the crank out plus all the metal scared 6 pistons pretty good . The block had been to the machine shop and they said it will clean up at 4.560 bore , this block can be bore to 4.625.. I did not check the oil temp that day , but I do not believe it was real hot , The most I ever seen it was at 245 after about 10 hard passes back to back .

I need to start on an engine this Winter so I am just looking at all my options , I can easily make this engine a 588 with a 4.560 bore and a 4.50 crank and run it like I have the past two years , or sell  this Block for like a 1000 and sell the Dart  intake with all the nitrous lines and bottles  and buy a short block and build something from there .

I just need to get a game plan and start when I can get some money .

So let me know what you think ..

Was there enough bearing clearance to begin with? Was there trash in the oiling system when assembled? There are alot of drag car guys who make pass after pass with concreted blocks and they run alot hotter than in a boat with no trouble.

merlan block's have a lot of meat in the from the get go , don't know why they filled it, but if you'r worried
just add the oil cooler set up to it  good to go .  :smile15:

Not for sure ,I think  we will add an oil  cooler and run it .. Who knows , an old rod bolt could have stretgh and made the clearance off. any way It time to start on a new engine .

Hey Brian , I drove by your place Saturday and the gate was shut so I did not come in . I was going to talk to you about your old rotating assemble , I was out cruizing in my Camaro .and thoiugh I would try and find your place . I was thinking to put your old rotating assemble in my 454 block .. Did not know  if you ever sold it ..

What do you think of a 4.56 bore and a 4.50 stroke making a 588 for a lake boat ??? The block can accept a 4.50 stroke max.

Thanks guys for the response..

I sold all extra parts I had this summer. I do not know about your boat but mine sure likes the 4.25 stroke and the 4.600 bore. We are only turning it 7,600 at the finish with 150 hp of nitrous. Ran 8.81 at 123.67 shutting nitrous off at 3/4 track.

If I have a tall deck 10.2 height and I want to make a 588 , that would be a 4.50 stroke and a 4.560 bore , what length of rods do i need ??

This depends on piston availability,

Rod lg  Piston ht  r/s ratio
6.535    1.395    1.542
6.7        1.230    1.489
6.8        1.130    1.511

Due to the rod to stroke ratios I'd stuff as long a rod in that as I could I know you can get 1.120 pistons because I know two that have bought them for 540/565 combinations. Check JE and some others and see whats on the shelves.
