I think the only pic "back in the day" got ruined on my toolbox years ago by a stray cup of coffee. The flood of memories is wild. I am going to talk to John and ask him if you can call him and when. I understand your curiousity and the desire for history. When I get him aligned I will PM you with the info. Take care of that one, she is precious in my memory. Had a lot of good times. ::big hug: ::grin:

The guy that painted the boat, Eddie ??????, was AWESOME. The only guy that I have dealt with since then that was that calibur was Steve Carter in Austin / Round Rock.

Yea will be cool to find so old pictures of it ::D

There is a thread with similar situation on Hotboat in Just Jets. This guy buys an old Rogers hull, goes to start working on it, scuffing off the old paint & uncovers some names painted on the hull. Turns out they were the names of the guys on the team that used to race the boat in the late 70s or so....

Then a little later, the old team members come in and start posting, sharing stories of when they were racing the boat & posting some cool ass old pics of their racing days & what the boat originally looked like...... Last I seen of it, the guy was gonna restore the boat back to what it was when it was racing. It was a circle boat, if I remember correctly. Very cool thread. ::grin:

To keep all of you updated I spoke to John this afternoon and he confirmed that this is GFD that he had. He has been busy but told me that he was going to come in and register and post more info. George, keep an eye out for this thread. BTW, his next boat was a Sidescraft that only weighed in at 420#. That is why I called the Hondo heavy! Look forward to the next chapter!

Well I emailed John White On DRAGBOAT ALLEY and this is what he told me.And also still trying to talk to him. ::D

Yes that was my first flattie. I bought it from a guy named Dave Driskell and sold it to Gary Deterling. Jason is my brother we spent many hours sking and racing on Lake Conroe and Clear Lake.
The boat was painted by Eddie Salnis and Dave and I build the engine. It was a 427 30 over with 2 660 center squirters. We put a 150 shot of nos just for good measure lol. I raced the boat at two race Waco and Monroe. It ran mid 13's at 83 in the 1/4.
Dave bought the boat from Chuck Basone the name of it was Scared Stiff. Chuck has a gararge in Clear Lake if ya want to look him up.
Sorry been thru 3 divorce and not many pictures left. Anyway I will look and see if I can find one the boat was really nice in its day.

I sent a PM to George (PRO53) but will share with the rest of y'all, yeah it was a nasty time for John in the GFD days. Bad divorce only to go find a couple of more. LOL (John don't kill me, but I follwed your lead) Anyway, John got started in this boat racing thing about in 84 just before I got out of the Navy. He had a good friend that had gotten a hot boat and they started hanging out together and then John just had to get him one too. That was GFD, but we never got her to set right. Probably never had enough ponies for her to get happy. He sold her and bought a Sidescraft that was WAY lighter. Owens bros in Pearland did the motor in her and John named her "Religious Indecision". I tried to help as much as I could, but being a father took priority at the time. We used to go to Clear lake, actually the Turtle Club, and he would make passes. Funniest one was when the motor backfired through the scoop and he put it out by standing in front of the scoop and hugging it till he stopped feeling the warmth. (Never forget that one!)

Anyway, John eventually went on to license in EVERY propeller driven class in the SDBA, not something many have done. He ran every class from RR to TFH. He dominated the PGF ranks for many years till 2001 when Craig Caulk had him shoe the Nitrofish TAH. We took runner up that year in SDBA and had made several appearances in IHBA as well. hen John went on to shoe for Gene Hackett in the world's only twin screw flat, The ATTA Special. That's the red boat you see jumping out of the water. We tried to get her to take a set, but everytime the props got right she would come out of the water. Finally at Phoenix in 2005 he got her into the 7s but that was with him nearly crashing.

His next step was TFH and he loved that ride. Wolfie gave him a boat that he described as driving a Cadillac. John has been President of the NDBA and SDBA, class rep for many classes and has worked races from the gate to the tower.

Sorry for the long post, but several wanted to know John's history.

Lets see, if memory serves me correct at Bryan in 2004 John was supposed to make a license attempt. The boat was not ready by the time they called TAF to the water and we were still campaigning the twin screw, so he jumped into the flat and ran. Daryl Erlich, the driver of Hotlicks, crashed on his pass at the big end so John had to wait till Phoenix to try to license. He did not get the license then so had to start 2005 trying to license. I think it took him about 5 races to finally get licensed due to the BBQs going on in the back end of the boat. So he finished off 2005 and I think he came in 13th with IHBA and high points champion with SDBA.

In 2006, even with all the fires, he wound up 3rd in IHBA and runnered up in SDBA by like 7 points. He and Daryl were teammates with Dennis Gibson in the fuel deal.
