Finally getting around to replacing the fender boards on my trailer. Lost one of them out on the road somewhere, don't even know when, lol. The other one was hanging on by one bolt and flapping in the breeze so I pulled it off to possibly use as a template for new ones. That didn't end up being the case, but for being 16 years old, I thought the one left was not in too bad of shape.
So without the fender boards, the tires can sling crap up on the side of the boat... rocks, wheel bearing grease, etc. Not to mention when loading the possibility of rubbing/scraping up against the fender. Boat has more than enough scratches on it and had a bit of spare time due to the crappy weather so got after it.
Didn't do anything too crazy. Cut new pieces of wood, sanded off the sharp edges to make a rounded edge for the carpet to wrap around and rattle-canned them black.
After measuring for new holes to mount them to the fender, I decided to take a different approach... last time back in '06 I used carriage bolts through the wood, with nuts under the fender to hold them on. Over time the wood got soft and the carriage bolts started to spin, so could never tighten them down. This time I used T-nuts in the fender board, so I could just use screws to attach them. I used lock washers with blue thread lock so hopefully they stay in place.
Far as the boards themselves, I still had some of the indoor/outdoor carpet I used in the past so used it again. Used some 3M spray adhesive to stick the carpet down, then used stainless staples around the edges to keep it in place. That said, I bought a pneumatic stapler to do the stapling and it kicked ass. Thanks Patch for that suggestion
Now, pics... hopefully in order, starting with a pic of the original board, then showing how it turned out, along with a pic of the stapler I used.
