I've run drums of the stuff BUT I Do Add , Lead Substitute and a bit of 2cycle oil as an upper lube due to the fact AvGas is a Low Lead blend
The "low lead" term is actually from times past.
Back int the good old days, the AV gas came with about twice the amount of lead as today. When it was decided to reduce the amount of lead in gasoline for aviation use, it became called 100LL. Previously, it was called 100/130, when it had the higher amounts of lead.
There is a lot of misinformation about AV gas, mostly from sellers of Racing gas and people who failed to do any homework to find out about it.
A number of people use an upper cylinder lubrication. The lead substitute probably doesn't hurt anything, but I don't know many who use it.
Most modern automotive engines don't require it.
If you stop and think about it, aviation gas is used primarily for aircraft. There is nothing about the fuel that will be more detrimental to use in any engine than necessary. The only exception is that the lead can foul plugs. One of the last places you want engine failure is in an airplane.
While it is true that many airplane engines are assembled with different tolerances than automotive engines, in most cases those engines are aluminum and air cooled.
Several things I have heard over the years is that AV gas is dry, and yes it is, the water content is very strictly controlled.
The other is AV gas was designed for low RPM engines. The gas has no idea how fast the motor is turning.
The burn rate is controlled by compression and spark advance, along with engine design.
How many time have you heard about motorcycle racers using it? They are not low RPM engines.
As long as the Octane is adequate for the engine, it's a good gas to use.
There are higher Octane rated gasolines that will allow higher compression, more advance and some other variables, but if the 100 Octane (actually closer to 96) it is adequate, it's a good fuel
I had used it with no additives from before God made dirt and never had a problem with it.
I did my homework on the AV gas and have nothing but good thoughts about it, if it's used along with common sense.
Don't use it in an engine that is 14-1 compression.
