Those Scarabs were set up with a pretty conservative x-dimension so I don't think the 5-blade will work that well on it. Five blades are normally used on step bottoms with real high x-dimensions because they give a lot of stern lift and bite. With a straight bottom hull you need something that gives you some bow lift. All hulls will react different though so it never hurts to try.

I know you have a few so for that 30' 502 4800 rpm 62 mph what prop is a good one to start with?

Most of mine are gone now but I will check to see what I have left. The 23 pitch you have on it now is probably pretty close. You will hit redline at 5000 with a stock 502. Is the prop you have now been lab finished? If not, that will probably put you where you want that setup. 5000 and 65mph is pretty much all you will get out of it the way it is.

how many blades on the current prop?

A 23 pitch will be a 3-blade.
oh yeah duh!  ive got a 25p you can try, i think chris has dibs on it right now, but you need a few more rpms to turn it, ditch the merc ignition run a msd to get rid of that revlimiter, get some aluminum heads, emi exaust, and run only 5 mph more!  jump.gif jump.gif

how well does it plane out? i might look into dropping a pitch size and going to a B1 four blade

I went back and checked my props and all I have left is a 21 pitch 3 blade mirage and a lab finished 28 pitch 4 blade Mach I that came off my 26 Scarab with the blower motor. You are welcome to try the Mach I but I am pretty sure it will be too much.

chris is still trying to get propped right

i with the 25p just me in the boat and low fuel did 80 on the GPS(think that was about 5600 rpm) last year at medina, that is white knuckle chine walking all over the place

with the 28p four blade in I do 78 GPS at about 5000 with a lot better hole shot and mid range punch

I also dont think the 5 blade will work.  Ive been playing with 3 and 4 blades on my hull, and havent found whats "right."  the 4 blades dont have enough cup in them to give me the bow lift I need on the big end, but they cruise really well.

Im going to try Johns 3 Blade Mirage 25 this summer and think that will be the right prop.

I have a Bravo 1 24 pitch that will probably work out just right on your boat.  You are more than welcome to try it.  It wont give you better top end, but will give you 4-7 mph more at cruise speed, and a much better holeshot.

Funny I wont be here Memorial weekend cause I am going to BCR (heading in your direction) while you are heading in mine.

This is all exactly right for most earlier model non-step v- hull. 3 Blade=more top end 4 Blade=better hole shot & cruise because less prop slip. It just depends on what you are trying to achieve.

Mike take your prop to Baumans Props (here in Houston) and tell them what you want they will work it to your specs.

John, you should try my 28p lab finished four blade Mach I. It has a little more slip to it than a Bravo so it might work good on yours. You are welcome to try it if you want.

Don't know of them but if they can do a good job with lab finishing on his 23's I think that will end up being the perfect prop for him. It has been the best for everyone else I have known with a stock set up like his. When you start modifying engines and x-dimensions all bets are off and it is just trial, trial, & more trial.

Same thing with performance whacker boats.  That is why you stick as many props as you can on it.  Get a style you feel works best for your hull.  Go to a good prop shop like Baumans and have them finish it and make adjustments for your application.  Baumans beat on props that are so large you bring them in on a Semi and they also work in my friends Formula 1 boats and everything in between.  You just need to tell them what your objectivies are and they can get you there.  My .02 for what it is worth  Plus the girl at the front counter is HOT!
